The Melbourne Rebels have continued their strong connection with the Victorian Rugby Community through hosting Northern Panthers RUC Director of Coaching Andrew Shaw.

Shaw, who has over 15 years of rugby coaching experience, joined Melbourne Coaching staff for the week to experience the preparations which have been undertaken by the side ahead of the Club’s match against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

Although boasting vast experience in coaching rugby, Shaw says his time at the Rebels has opened his eyes to various coaching techniques.

“Just the way they structure their training sessions and the way they train is something I haven’t seen before,” Shaw said.

“There’s a lot of drills that I’ve seen that I can use, modify a little bit and use them with our Club.”

While down at the Club, Shaw was immersed in team meetings and coaching prep talks, while also standing by the sidelines as the players were put through their paces.

And after having experienced a host of new coaching techniques during his short but busy time with the Club, Shaw says he can’t wait to implement his learnings to help grow rugby in Victoria’s northern suburbs.

“It’s been great, the guys are good, they share their knowledge with everybody, and it’s been really good,” Shaw said.

“(Being here) has helped me a lot and hopefully I can transfer a lot this knowledge back to the Northern Panthers to help the Club grow over the coming season and in the future.”
