The Melbourne Rebels have today secured the services of Matt Gibbon through until at least the end of 2022.

It’s been a rapid rise for the for the young prop, whose pathway to Super Rugby provides an inspiring story.Initially invited down during the 2019 preseason on a training contract, Gibbon’s extraordinary work ethic instantly caught the eye of Melbourne officials, who swiftly offered the front rower a spot on the Rebels 2019 playing list.

The 24-year-old says he’s excited to secure his future with the Melbourne club and looking forward to adding to his 18 career games.

“I have a great attachment to Melbourne, it’s people and the rugby community. The fans have welcomed me here as one of their own and it’s made the transition into professional rugby so much easier.

“It’s really excited to be part of this team for another two years and continue the trajectory that Dave is taking us on. I’m looking forward to tasting plenty of success with The Rebels.”

Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson was thrilled to see the popular prop remain in the Rebels system for another three seasons.

“Matt is the ultimate competitor and someone who continues to raise the bar on and off the field with his relentless work ethic.”

“Matt had a phenomenal debut season with us last year playing every game and I have no doubt he’ll play an important role in our push for Super Rugby success in years to come. We believe Matt has the potential to strive for national honours.”
