Club Statement

Following on from yesterday’s announcement by the Prime Minister and the issuing of formal advice public advice against holding non-essential, organised public gatherings of more than 500 people from this Monday 16 March, Rugby Australia has confirmed that any Super Rugby matches played in Australia after this weekend will be done so behind closed doors for an indefinite period.

This outcome and advice will naturally directly affect arrangements for the Melbourne Rebels scheduled match against the Sunwolves on Friday 20 March at AAMI Park.

Whilst we are disappointed that we are not able to take the field with your support at the The Stockade next Friday night, we completely accept this outcome given the extraordinary circumstances. The health and safety of our members, fans, players, staff, volunteers, media and match officials, is our absolute priority and we will continue to follow the advice of government, SANZAAR, Rugby Australia and other relevant authorities to ensure that the wellbeing of all stakeholders is front of mind at all times.

As this situation is continuously evolving at a rapid pace we will await the conclusion of this weekend’s Super Rugby matches before communicating a further update early next week.

Thank you for your ongoing support the Melbourne Rebels and your understanding in this circumstance. As a Club, we feel very privileged to be part of a very passionate and close-knit Rugby community in Victoria. Please look after yourself and one another during these unprecedented times.

Yours Sincerely,

Baden Stephenson

Melbourne Rebels CEO
