As part of our Citizen Watches ‘Spending Time’ series, we catch up with former players who have donned the navy-blue jersey.

This week we caught up with former utility back Angus Roberts.

What has post-Super Rugby life looked like for you?

After I finished in 2014, I moved back to Sydney and played a couple of more seasons with Sydney Uni and focused on starting a professional career off the field.

I started with a company called Graincorp in 2015 and have worked here since in a variety of different roles with the latest being a Commodity Trader, trading Sorghum and Chickpeas.

I've always had an interest and enjoyed Agriculture growing up on a farm myself so it has been enjoyable and challenging at the same time contending with droughts/floods the highs and lows of Agriculture.

Playing Rugby was great and I still enjoying watching it now, I am very grateful to have had the experiences I have had and met all the wonderful people. However, I’m glad with the decision not to continue to pursue rugby and focus on building a career.

I currently still live in Sydney with my Fiancée and enjoying getting out of town when we can to her farm in Goulburn on my Family home in Tamworth.

Have you been following the Rebels 2020 campaign?

Yes, I always have a keen interest in super rugby and in particular the Rebels.

The side has changed significantly since I was there with only 1 or 2 players left but I think its a very strong squad with great depth and they look like they are playing a good brand of footy at the moment. Bit of a slowish start to the year but they've been in every game with chances to win and started to click in the few weeks before it was suspended which was promising.

What were some of your favourite memories during your time at AAMI Park?

My favourite memories apart from my debut during my time down there would all be centred around the playing squad and the bonds we built with each other. We trained hard, had some brutal review sessions under Tony in particular but we all stayed pretty tight and enjoyed each others company and made sure we celebrated the success we did have.

Who was your favourite teammate to play with and why?

I'll have to go with a few favourite teammates. Weeksy and Engo for Team Morale, Seany McMahon and Inman for Consistency and my other roomie Stirzy who always great to chat, train and play with.

What do you miss the most about playing for the Rebels?

The camaraderie within the playing group. You go through some pretty tough times together and having 30-35 ppl beside you doing the same thing was always comforting.

The discipline - Having a very solid routine training hard, keeping fit, working and developing skills and always trying to improve. Hard to replicate when working 9-5 Jobs.

Melbourne is known for its strong coffee and café culture – during your playing days, where was your favourite spot to go during a day off?

I lived in Nth Melbourne with Tom English and Nic Stirzaker during my time in Melbourne and there was a few Cafe's on Errol street we used to frequent.

Auction Rooms I can remember being good. Whilst I enjoy a cappuccino, the other 2 boys used to like Almond or Soy Latte's with turmeric or something like that and Auction Rooms catered to their needs!
