A Message from Our Captain

· Super Rugby - AU
by Rebels Media

Dear members and fans,

These extraordinary times continue to throw new and unexpected challenges our way.

Whilst the team and I are on the road, our thoughts are definitely with everyone back in Melbourne.

We hope you are staying safe and healthy, with family and friends.

The team has been on the road for more than a fortnight and it looks like it will be several weeks more before we are back home.

When we left Melbourne to set up base in Canberra at the end of June, we didn’t know how long we would be away.

We still don’t know exactly when we will return, but with the imposition of the lockdown until mid-August we believe we will be away until our Bye in Round 8 of the Super Rugby AU competition.

That unfortunately means we will be highly unlikely to host our “home” game on Friday 7 August at AAMI Park.

At this time of so many unknowns, myself, our leaders and our entire group has taken comfort from the things that we do know.

The certainties that we can rely upon.

We know we are a tight knit and united playing and coaching group.

We know we are building well into this competition – even though we are frustrated that we didn’t close it out as well as we could have last Friday night.

And we know we have so many passionate members and fans doing it tough in Melbourne right now.

We want to make you all proud during these tough times. We aren’t happy with our first couple of games and know we have much growth left in us.

At the same time, it’s been great to see so many of our younger players step up and show their quality.

The likes of Josh Kemeny, Pone Fa’amusili and Trevor Hosea have led the way from my perspective.

Having Efi and Mike join us from the Sunwolves has really bolstered our group, and I know guys like Isi and Brad (Wilkin) are working really hard on their rehab to be ready for selection ASAP.

Dave mentioned it to the press last week, but we have a resolute belief that we can play finals – and win this competition.

That's definitely what's driving us right now.The team stayed in Sydney for a few days after our Reds game and today we’ve headed back to Canberra for another intense week of training.

We will then head back up to Sydney late next week in advance of our Round 4 game next Friday night (24 July) against the Waratahs at the SCG.

We now expect that we will also be playing our Round 5 (vs. Force) and Round 6 (vs. Brumbies) in Sydney as well so will do our best to settle in and stay focused on the job at hand.

I wanted to thank the many members that have sent “RebelGrams” through to the team over the last couple of weeks.

We have really enjoyed receiving them and to read and see your support for us all has been really touching and motivating.

We will do our best to send replies over the coming week and if anyone has a message for us, please send it through to RebelGram@MelbourneRebels.com.au

Thank you for your ongoing support of our Club.

It means a lot to all of us on the road and working away from home back in Melbourne.

Here’s to a big few weeks.

Go Rebels!
