The Melbourne Rebels have welcomed today’s confirmation from Rugby Australia (RA) and New Zealand Rugby (NZR), which will see a new Trans-Tasman competition kick off on May 14 next year.

The Trans-Tasman competition will comprise of all 10 Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby clubs and will take place over six action-packed weekends, before concluding in the lead up to the 2021 Australian and New Zealand Test seasons, beginning in July.

Each Australian Super Rugby side face their New Zealand counterparts once, playing games both at home in Australia and abroad over in New Zealand, in 25 crossover matches.

All matches will be broadcast on Stan, with one match per round also live on the Nine Network.

All teams will be guaranteed two home games and two away games, as well as a ‘Super Round’, where all matches played in Round Three will be played at one location, over one ground-breaking blockbuster weekend.

Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby will announce the bidding process to select the location of the ‘Super Round’ in the near future.

The two teams that finish at the top of the 10-team ladder will then progress to the Trans-Tasman Final to be held on June 19, hosted by the team who finishes on top of the ladder.

Exact kick-off times, dates and venues will be announced shortly.

After a challenging year, season 2021 promises to be a great one for Victorian rugby fans, with today’s announcement guaranteeing at least six home games for the Rebels next year.

The Rebels open their Trans-Tasman campaign against the Auckland Blues in Round One, marking the first encounter between the two sides since the Rebels gripping 20-10 win over the Blues at Eden Park in 2018.

Melbourne then travels to Jordan Uelese’s hometown of Wellington, clashing with the Hurricanes in Round Two.

The Rebels then shift their attention to their rivals from the South of New Zealand, where they’ll face a determined Highlanders side out for redemption following last year’s stunning 28-22 defeat to the Rebels in Dunedin – the Highlanders’ first home loss to an Australian team in six years.

In what looms as a crucial match for Melbourne’s Trans-Tasman aspirations, the Rebels will enter the ‘Super Round’ clash carrying plenty of confidence, having won the last two encounters between the two sides.

Round Four marks the Rebels’ last stop in New Zealand with an imposing trip to Hamilton to take on the Chiefs. Awaiting the Rebels upon their return back to the Stockade, will be reigning Super Rugby Aotearoa Champions, the Crusaders, in what is set to be a primetime epic to round out the five-week draw.

Speaking following today’s exciting announcement, Melbourne Rebels Assistant Coach, Kevin Foote, said:

“The 2020 domestic competitions were a huge success both in Australia and New Zealand, and we all know that a lot of effort has gone into next year's tournaments,” said Foote.

“We’re all so motivated and so inspired having seen the recent competition and opportunity amongst the Wallabies, and the rivalry against the New Zealanders in this year’s Bledisloe Cup.

“We’re so grateful and extremely excited about being involved in this format and can’t wait to really excite everyone about Trans-Tasman Super Rugby.”
