The Melbourne Rebels are today excited to confirm the exact fixture dates for the inaugural Super Rugby Trans-Tasman competition in 2021 following finalisation of the complete draw between Rugby Australia, New Zealand Rugby and respective broadcasters.

Reigning Super Rugby Aotearoa champions, the Crusaders, and runners-up, the Blues, will both make their way to Melbourne in the new year for spectacular Saturday blockbusters at the Stockade.Melbourne Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson indicated the Club was very pleased with freshly released finer details of the Trans-Tasman draw.

“Today’s news is the cherry on top for Melbourne Rebels members and fans in 2021.”

“We already knew that Super Rugby in 2021 would be the more exciting and accessible than ever and we are delighted with the confirmation that we will host the Blues in the Australian match of the opening round live on the Nine Network. We didn’t get to host the Blues in 2020 as was planned and we have a great respect for one another as clubs, so it’s going to be a huge occasion.”

“We have set high expectations of what we are looking to achieve in 2021. We get to start the year locally with Super Rugby AU and build plenty of momentum into the Trans-Tasman fixtures.”

The Rebels will then have fixtures on Friday 21 May (Hurricanes) and Saturday 5 June (Chiefs) in NZ in Rounds Two and Four respectively, with the Round Three seeing the first-ever “Super Round” which is yet to be locked in to a host city at this stage.

The final round of the regular season will see the Rebels host the Crusaders in Melbourne and in an afternoon match at the Stockade, both for the first time since 2018.

“Taking on the best team in the history of Super Rugby on a beautiful winter’s afternoon in the world’s sporting capital is going to be something,” said Stephenson.

“We’re working very closely with Rugby Victoria about club rugby fixturing that long weekend and we really hope all of the rugby community can mobilize to enjoy the game live in this family friendly time slot.”

“We know now who, where and when for all of 2021. It’s now onto our players to continue with the exceptionally hard work they’ve started this pre-season; our coaches to dial up our preparation meticulously; and our fans to bring the energy and stay right behind us. No matter what else 2021 might throw at us, we will be ready and will make Melbourne proud.”
