The boyhood dream of having your talents welcomed by a Super Rugby club became an exciting reality for a number of new faces at The Stockade yesterday.

On the eve of the 2021 pre-season campaign, the Melbourne Rebels hosted all its new players with a formal club induction.

Led by GM of Rugby, Nick Stiles, Head Coach, Kevin Foote and RUPA Player Development Manager, Moana Leilua, the morning session educated players on the the club’s history, it’s identity and the importance it places on loyalty, love, and accountability.

Among the new faces, was proud Endeavour Hills junior and Fountain Gate School Captain, Lebron Naea, who was still pinching himself at the prospect of representing his hometown on provincial rugby’s grandest of stages.

“I’m so excited for this fantastic opportunity to join the club I’ve grown up supporting as a junior,” said Naea.

“The culture has been so welcoming and so supportive already. Footey talks about love and getting to mix and mingle with people you’ve never met before and getting to know them has been great.

“It’s exciting and can’t wait to get started with pre-season and develop my skills and hopefully put my name forward and make a strong case for selection.”

Eager to follow in the footsteps of his boyhood Victorian rugby heroes such as Jordan Uelese and Rob Leota, Naea is determined to “be a sponge” and learn as much as his can from his more experienced teammates, in the hopes he can one day soon pull on the red and navy jersey.

“Coming in as a rookie, I’m just looking to ask a lot of questions and gain a lot of knowledge from the older boys and grow as quickly as possible.”

“The older boys have laid such a great path for us coming through.

“Seeing them growing up on tv has been huge for the younger generation of Burn Boyz coming up and it really motivates us to continue to push, develop and be the best players and people we can be.”
