The Melbourne Rebels and Rugby Victoria are excited to announce a spring rugby extravaganza on Friday, September 23 at Power House Junior Rugby Club.

Five teams will be involved in the inaugural Victorian Club Series, including a Victorian men’s and women’s team, a Pacific Cup men’s and women’s side, and the Melbourne Rebels.

The Victorian men’s and women’s sides boast the state’s premier club rugby talent, with the day serving as valuable preparation ahead of their Australian Rugby Shield campaigns, kicking off in Adelaide on September 29.

Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s Pacific Cup teams will be made up of the best remaining talent, ahead of next month’s Pacific Nations Cup Tournament.

The Rebels will play two thirty-minute halves against the men’s Pacific Cup XV side and the Victorian Axemen, with the state’s best Club players receiving the opportunity to compete for a place on the Rebels touring squad for next month’s trial against the Brumbies in Albury and tour of Japan.

The announcement caps an exciting month of rugby in Victoria, following successful senior and junior club rugby finals campaigns and the upcoming Bledisloe Cup at Marvel Stadium on September 15.

Melbourne Rebels GM of Rugby, Nick Stiles, said the Rebels were excited to put on Friday’s showcase and provide an opportunity for Melbourne’s best players to compete against Super Rugby opposition.

“We’re really excited as a Club, to be part of such a fantastic day of Victorian rugby,” said Stiles.

“Everybody is looking forward to putting on a high-quality show for our community that’s been starved of rugby over the last couple of years.

“Our inaugural Victorian Club Series will also provide all five teams with valuable game preparation ahead of the Australian Rugby Shield tournament, the Pacific Nations Cup and our upcoming tour of Japan.

“The Axemen have a long and proud place in the history of the Victorian Rugby Community, so to be able to showcase a Melbourne Rebels team, which now has many homegrown talents, against the best of the Dewar Shield in the Axemen, is a true reflection of the hard work that the whole rugby community has put into the growth of rugby in Victoria.

“Another exciting aspect about Friday is that we’ll be looking to identify Victorian players that we can bring on our trip to Albury and across to Japan. As a Club, we’re committed to supporting and elevating Victorian rugby, and this is another example of that. If you play in Melbourne, there are great opportunities to continue developing as a player and push yourself to that next level.

“This will be a proud day for our Club, Rugby Victoria and the Victorian community.”
