The Melbourne Rebels are thrilled to announce its Shaw and Partners U16s squad for the upcoming National U16 Championships.

Head Coach, Charlie Bird, has named a strong 32-man squad for this year’s competition which officially kicks off on October 9, with a five-week regular season which will see all five Super Rugby clubs facing off against each other for the first time since 2019.

In what shapes as an exhilarating month of rugby from Australia’s next generation of rugby stars, the U16s games will be played as a part of a doubleheader with the U19s games.

After a first-round bye, the Shaw and Partners Melbourne Rebels U16s will launch their campaign with an October 12 clash against the Western Force at Power House Junior Rugby Club at 1:30 pm.

The Rebels will then travel to New South Wales, to face the Waratahs at Waratahs HQ on October 23, before returning to Melbourne and rolling up their sleeves against the Brumbies on October 30 at 12 pm.

Melbourne will wrap up its five-week regular season with a Sunday afternoon clash with the Reds at Sunnybank Rugby Club on November 6.

Shaw and Partners Melbourne Rebels U16s Head Coach, Charlie Bird, says his side was excited for the opportunity to do Victorian rugby proud.

“The squad is really looking forward to representing Victoria and the Rebels on the national stage,” said Bird.

They’ve worked hard in a short space of time to put themselves in the best possible position and I have no doubt come Wednesday, they’ll be ready to rip in.

“We want to put up consistent performances throughout the Championships, built through the foundation of hard work.

“We are there to compete and put our best foot forward, and we can’t wait for the games to begin.”

After the completion of the regular season, the two top sides will face off in the final on November 13, with the host venue to be confirmed.

Following this, High Performance National Programs Coach Nathan Grey will then select a preliminary 2023 Junior Wallabies squad from the U19s championship and an U16s select team.

Every match of the National U16 Rugby Championship will be broadcast live on Stan Sport.
