Matt Philip stamped his authority as one of the Rebels first choice locks this season thanks to his aggression in contact and precision at line out time.
Philip hails from Sydney, Australia and started his journey to professional rugby at Sydney University in the Shute Shield where his form earned him a call up to the Sydney Stars squad ahead of the inaugural National Rugby Championship in 2014. He made 15 appearances for the Stars across two seasons and scored two tries in that time.
Philip's rise to Super Rugby level was a swift one as an injury crisis in the Force's second row saw him cross Australia from Sydney to Perth to train with them during the 2016 mid-year international break, and subsequently earning a debut in Round 15 against the Cheetahs.
Philip would then play a further two games to register three appearances in his debut season.
Philip enjoyed a promising second year in 2017, playing in 10 games for the Force, scoring his first Super Rugby try in Round 2 against the Reds.
After only two seasons and 13 games in Super Rugby, Philip would be selected for the Wallabies squad for their match against Japan in Yokohama, where he would make his international debut off the bench, becoming Wallaby No. 915.
Philip joined the Rebels at the start of the 2018 Super Rugby season and swiftly cemented himself in the Rebels forward pack, playing a career high 16 games.
Philip continued his superb start in Melbourne again in 2019, elevating his game to another level at lock. Philip played 15 games and was forced to miss a game due to a foot injury.
Philip was selected in the Barbarians team to face Fiji at Twickenham, starting as a lock.
