A proud Melbournian of Samoan heritage, Pone Fa’amausili (FAR-ah-MOW-see-LI) is a literal man-mountain. Tall, powerfully built and intimidating, Fa’amausili has become a cult hero with his fearless ball-carrying charges and bone-rattling defence.

The hulking prop played rugby league in his youth, at the Storm, Dragons and Panthers, before he tagged along with a friend to trials for the Melbourne Rebels’ U20s. Fa’amausili wrote down backrow or lock as his preferred position however Wallaby #791 Nic Henderson put him straight into tighthead and he has remained there ever since.

2017 was Fa’amausili’s breakthrough year. He made his NRC debut with the Melbourne Rising and represented Australian U20s. Standout performances saw him put pen to paper as a part of the Rebels wider training squad in 2018 and he went on to make his provincial debut against the Sunwolves at AAMI Park. An improved commitment to training and diet saw Fa’amausili star in 2020 Super Rugby AU however a procession of calf and hamstring injuries has conspired to interrupt that progression.

In 2022, Fa’amausili was picked in the Wallabies squad for the Argentine leg of The Rugby Championship and he won his first, long awaited cap in the second Pumas’ Test at San Juan. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury following a questionable cleanout while playing for Australia ‘A’ against Japan, forced Fa’amausili to miss the end-of-season Spring Tour.

Highlights

2017 Represented Australia U20s at the Oceania Championships and was a shadow player for the squad at the tenth IRB U20s World Championship in France.

2022 Fa’amausili won his first international cap off the bench when he replaced Taniela Tupou in the 58th minute of the 17-48 second Test loss to Argentina. Ironically, a calf injury to Tupou opened the door for Fa’amausili to be capped in both Tests against New Zealand.
