The Melbourne Rebels will blood five players from Sydney club rugby in their match against the Western Force this Saturday night.

Matt Gibbons, Andrew Talua, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Rohan O’Reagan and Jack Johnson are put of the 24-man team that will feature alongside established Rebels players and young prospects.

Melbourne Rebels General Manager – Professional Rugby and Pathways, Nick Ryan said the match itself was going to present a great opportunity to see the squad’s depth, plus give opportunities to deserving players at a higher level.

“We’re excited about the depth our club possesses. The healthy competition for spots means that there will be really good players not getting that week to week opportunity,” Ryan said.

“The Rebels had a club-record of nine players called up for the Wallabies squad across the June International break, but it’s important that you have your whole squad buying-in if you’re to challenge in the Super Rugby competition.

“There are twists and turns in every season, so this is the chance for players to put their hand up and to ensure we cover all bases after the Test window.

“For these guys from Sydney club rugby scene, it’s a great opportunity against a quality opposition.”
