Melbourne is set for a rugby bonanza in 2022 with the announcement of a ‘Super Round’ in the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific season.

In Round 2 of the 2022 season, all 12 teams from the Super Rugby Pacific will descend upon Melbourne and play their matches at the Rebels’ home venue, AAMI Park, from Friday night to Sunday.

Perfectly positioned in Melbourne’s sporting summer after the Australian Open and before the Grand Prix, Super Round Melbourne is another jewel in the sporting capital’s crown according to Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events, Martin Pakula.

“We are thrilled to be bringing blockbuster events to Melbourne which attract big crowds, create jobs and create a real buzz around the city and state.

“The 2022 Super Round Melbourne will bring the best of our region’s rugby together at a world-class stadium in Melbourne, the capital of sporting events.”

The Super Round Melbourne is being backed by TEG Live, Asia Pacific’s leading live entertainment company.TEG CEO Geoff Jones was thrilled to be creating a unique event alongside Rugby Australia, New Zealand Rugby and SANZAAR for rugby fans in Melbourne and from across all of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

“Together with Super Rugby Pacific, we share a common goal to create a magic festival of rugby that fans will not forget: six brilliant games, including the two new teams, plus some additional touches that we will unveil closer to the event.

“Like all rugby fans, we cannot wait to see games of this quality live once again, and we are excited to have the support of the Victorian Government and Visit Victoria in bringing big events, crowds and tourists back into the beating heart of Melbourne.”

Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson said Melbourne was the perfect fit to host the inaugural Super Round.

“As Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia, it made perfect sense that Super Round would take place in Melbourne.

“Melbourne’s rugby fans and sporting fans in general have been starved of live sport over the past 18 months, so I can definitely see this event bringing communities and sporting fans back together in a major celebration.

“We can’t wait for Rugby fans all across the Pacific to visit Melbourne and see the game’s best players like Richie Mo'unga, Michael Hooper and Aaron Smith in action at one of the best rugby stadiums in the world, AAMI Park.”
